Each fan converter unit can detect internal failures (overheat, overcurrent). If a failure is detected, the converter unit will shut off fan power and reset the fan. The converter will attempt to restart the fan (up to three starts), then if failure is still detected, it will shut off the fan and a message is posted on EICAS. The crew can turn off the RECIRC FAN located on the BLEED/AIR CONDITIONING control panel.

Volume 2 Flight Crew Operating Manual Rev 2A, Apr 11, 2005

The Avionics and Cockpit Display Exhaust system ensures the ventilation of the avionic equipment and cockpit displays to prevent excessive heating. Air exhausts through the underfloor and by recirculation.
The main items ventilated are:
.
All cockpit display units, by extracting air from immediately behind them.

.
All electronic boxes in the under floor avionics bay, by extracting air from above them.

.
All electronic boxes in the avionics rack, by blowing air in and extracting air from around them.

The cockpit displays are each ventilated internally by two integral fans, which pick up ambient air at their forward lower edge and dump the hot exhaust air from exits on the higher part of their back panel. This hot exhaust air enters the space behind the cockpit displays and is ventilated by the avionics ventilation fan.
Both the under floor avionics bay and cockpit displays ventilation is accomplished by an avionics exhaust fan. The fan is mounted at the rear of the under floor avionics bay and is oriented to direct its exhaust directly through ducts towards the forward outflow valve.
The avionics rack is ventilated by an avionics rack fan that blows air through supply piccolo tubes. The avionics exhaust fan extracts air from the sealed avionics rack through extraction piccolo tubes connected to the exhaust ducting.
AVIONICS EXHAUST FAN

VALVE
The avionics rack and exhaust fans can run at two speeds, high or low and are controlled by the ACSCs. The ACSCs exchange fan status with each other. If one fan fails the ACSCs will cause the operative fan to run at high speed. The avionics rack fan is controlled by ACSC 1, the avionics exhaust fan by ACSC 2.
The fans are driven at high speed when one fan has failed, or the cockpit (ventilated) temperature exceeds 27°C.
The fans are driven at low speed when cockpit (ventilated) temperature equals 27°C or below and both fans are running.

AIR CONDITIONING AND PRESSURIZATION

Fan failure signals are created by the avionics rack fan itself or, for the avionics exhaust fan, by its converter. The following EICAS messages are generated:
.
AV FANS FAIL (caution if both fans fail on ground).

.
AVIONIC FAN FAIL (advisory for avionics exhaust fan failure)
