B. Crew Oxygen Bottle
The crew oxygenbottle is ahighpressure Kevlar cylinderand is locatedin theforward fuselageunderfloor area. The bottle assembly consistsof amanualshut-off valve, pressure gauge,and apressure relief valve. Thebottle contains 50.0cubic feet(1.415 cubic meters)of oxygenpressuredto 1850psi at70bF(12.76MPa at21bC). Ifthe internalbottle pressure exceeds2800psi(193bars), thepressure relief valve opens andthebottle pressure is vented overboardthrough ahighpressure dischargeline. Whenthe contents ofthe oxygenbottle is vented overboard, agreen snapfrangible disc (located ontherightforwardfuselage)blows out,presenting avisualindication thatthe oxygenbottle contentshave beenvented.
C. Pressure Sensor/Regulator Unit
The pressure sensor/regulatorunit controls the flow of oxygenfromthe bottle to the masks. The unitis connectedto theoxygencylinder, crew masksandthe ground servicingpaneland consistsof apressure sensor, pressure regulatorandpressure relief valve.
The pressure regulator receives oxygenpressure fromthebottle at1850psi(12.76 MPa)anddecreases the outletpressure flow tothe crewmasks to78psi(538kPa).
The pressure sensor monitors thesupplypressure fromthecylinderand supplies pressure indications tothe servicingpanelandEICAS. Ifthe supplypressure fromthe bottle decreases below1410psig(9.721MPa), the sensor willsend asignaltothe EICASto display anOXYLOPRESS caution message onthe primarypage.
Ifthe regulatoroutletpressure exceeds109psi(752kPa), the relief valve opensto vent the excess pressure. The valvewill reset when the pressure decreases.
D. Crew Oxygen Mask
The crew oxygen masks are locatedin stowageboxes. One forthepilot, oneforthe copilotand oneforthe3rdflight crew position. The crew maskincludes anoxygen regulator, apneumatically controlledinflatable harness, aflow-controlknob, a mixture-controllever andamicrophone. To release the maskfromthestowagebox, theoperatorsqueezes thered release levers andholdsthem. This action opensthe quick-release doors, frees themaskandinflatestheharness. The operatorthendons themask. The redlevers are then released, whichdeflatestheharness, causingthe masktoinstall correctly ontheoperator’s head. The smoke goggles are separatefrom themaskand are stowedin apouchin thebottomof each stowagebox. The smoke goggles can be donnedover themaskandeye glasses andare usedby crew members when smoke or toxic fumes are presentin thecockpit. Withthe maskin thepositive pressure mode,the user activatesthepurge valve,located on thetop ofthe maskface piece to pressurize thegoggles. This prevents smoke orfumes from enteringthe goggles andirritatingthe eyes.
