The maximum operating altitudeofthe APUis 37,000feet.The maximum altitudeforAPU startingis 30,000feet. The maximum altitudefor main engine starting usingAPUbleedair is 13,000feet. ECSoperation usingAPUbleedair is 15,000feet.
AnElectronic ControlUnit(ECU), locatedin theaftequipment compartment, controls the APUthroughallphases ofoperation. The ECU monitors all sensors andswitches, sets up theappropriatefuelacceleration schedules andrelays specific operatingdatato theengine indication andcrew alertingsystem(EICAS). TheECUis poweredthroughselection of a PWR/FUEL switchlight ontheAPU controlpanelin theflight compartment.
The APUintake doorposition is continuously shown on theEICAS statuspage.APURPM andexhaustgastemperature (EGT)indications are shown on theEICAS statuspage,only whentheAPUPWR/FUEL switchlight ontheAPU controlpanelis selected.

1. APU POWER PLANT
The APUpowerplant consistsof agasturbine engine andagearbox.
A. Engine
The engine is asingle-shaft, constant speeddesign, consistingof acompressor, a combustorand atwo-stageturbine. The compressor draws large volumes ofair in throughtheinletdoor ontopoftheaftfuselagethendelivers itunderpressure tothe combustor. Fuelfrom bothwingtanks is addedtothehighpressure air andignited, increasingthe energyofthe airflow. Thehigh velocity, hightemperature gasses are deliveredtotheturbine section. The turbine convertsthehigh velocitygasses into mechanical energytodrive the compressor andgearbox. The exhaustgases are ducted overboardthroughthe exhaustpipe on the rightaftfuselage.
