B. Gearbox
The gearbox reduces theturbine shaft rpmto aspeed suitable to operatethegearbox mounted accessories. Accessories includethelubrication module,fuel controlunit, electric starterandgenerator. Thegearboxhas anintegraloil sump. The oillevel can be checked using asightglass on the oilfillerassembly.

1. SYSTEMS
The APUconsists of alubrication system, fuelsystem, ignition andstartingsystems, and an air intake andexhaust.
A. Lubrication
The lubricatingsystem consistsof amechanicallydriven lubrication module,oilfilter, oil cooler, low oilpressure switch, andanoiltemperature sensor. Thelube module providespressurized oiltothepower plant,gearboxandgeneratorforlubrication and heatremoval.
B. Fuel
Fuelis supplied to theAPUfuel controlunitfrom theleftand right wingtanks bythe XFLOW/APUpump(referto Chapter13). Thefuel shutoff valve is openedbytheECU at10% speed. The fuelcontrolunit starts, stopsand modulatestheflow offueltothe APUin response to commandsfrom theECU.
C. Ignition and Starting
The ignition andstartersystems are controlledbytheECU. The ECU commandsthe DC starter motorto rotatethepower plant.The starter acceleratesthe powerplantto a specific speedwhere theECUintroducesfueltothe combustor. The ignition systemis providedtoignitethefuel/airmixture in the combustor whichfurther acceleratesthe power plant.As the APU acceleratestowardsthe onspeed condition,the starteris disengaged. WhentheAPUreaches normaloperating speedtheignition is turnedoff. Atthis pointthe engine becomes self sufficient.
D. Air Intake
The air inletdooris locatedin theupper rearfuselage. An actuator, controlledbythe ECUpositions thedoor. Whenopen,thedoorprovides ramairforAPUoperation and theoil cooling. Ontheground,the airinletdoorhasonlytwo positions, openand closed(0and42b). Inflight,duringAPU startabove 13,000feet,theECUlimits the doorposition in response to APUengine rpmandaircraft speed. This prevents excessive amounts of ram air which could cause theAPUtoflameout. For APUstart below 13,000feet,thedooris fullyopen.
WhentheAPUis notoperating,the doorremains closedto prevent windmilling ofthe compressor. The inletdooralso serves asabarrierin theeventoffire.
