1. AC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
ACpower fortheaircraftelectricalsystems is providedbytwo engine-driven,integrated drive generators (IDGs)which supplypower toallACbuses during normaloperations. An APUgeneratorprovides abackupACpower source in flightif anIDGis inoperative or when theaircraftis on theground withtheengines off. IfallACpower is lostin flight, emergency ACpower is providedautomaticallyby adeployable air-driven generator(ADG). The AC distribution system is controlledbythe respective IDGandAPUgeneratorcontrolunits (GCUs). Eachgeneratoris monitoredbytheGCU’s forvoltage,frequencyandkilovolt amps (KVA)to provide systemfaultprotective shutdowns. An ACpowerdistribution schematic andsystem parameters are displayed on theEICASACsynoptic page.
A. Integrated Drive Generator (IDG)
EachIDG consistsof aconstant speeddrive (CSD)and agenerator. TheCSD uses an internaloilsystemtohydro-
mechanicallychangethe variable inputspeedfrom the engine accessorygearboxto a constantoutput speedtothegeneratortoproduce 115-
voltsACandto maintain aconstantfrequency of400Hz. Eachgeneratoris rated at30kilovoltamperes (KVA)upto an altitudeof35,000ft.,then 25KVAto 41,000ft.
Anoil cooler cools theoil usedbytheIDG. EachIDGis monitoredfor low oilpressure orhighoiltemperature. Inthe eventoflowoilpressure orhighoiltemperature, an (amber)FAULTlight(cover-
guarded)ontheEPSPwillilluminate. Liftingthe cover-
guardandpushingthe switchlightwill manuallydisconnecttheIDGfrom the engine gearbox.
