The IDGwill automaticallydisconnectif asevere oil overtemperature or overtorque condition occurs. Once disconnected,either manually orautomatically, theIDG cannot bereconnectedin flight. IftheIDG was disconnected manually, it can onlybe reset on theground, withtheengine shutdown. IftheIDG was disconnectedautomatically, it mustbe replaced.
Eachgenerator controlunit(GCU) controls andmonitors therelatedACgenerator systemandprovidesvoltageandfrequency regulation and faultprotection forits respective generator. TheGCU also protects theelectricalsystem from overcurrent anddifferential currentfaults. In the event of amalfunction, the GCUwill automatically disconnectthefaultygeneratorfrom therespective ACbuses. Thegenerator maybe reset whenthe malfunction is corrected ornolongerexists, by selectingthegenerator switchtotheOFF/RESETposition thenbackto ON.
B. APU Generator
The APUgeneratoris driven,directlybytheAPUgearbox, at aconstant speedto maintain aconstantfrequencyoutput. Thegeneratorprovides115-
volts, 400Hz AC power andis rated at30KVAfrom sea levelto37,000ft. AGCU, identicaltotheIDG GCU, providesthe same regulation andprotection functions astheIDGGCUs.
C. AC Distribution
Two different configurations ofACpower distribution are available,Full configuration andService configuration.

InFull configuration,alltheACbuses are powered using eitherIDG1, IDG2,theAPU generator orexternalAC. FornormalACdistribution,ACpower fromIDG1andIDG2 is distributedtoalltheACbuses via GCU controlled contactors in junction box1(JB1). There is apriority control ofACpower distribution. During normaloperation,IDG1 powers ACbus1andIDG2powers ACbus2. The failure ofagenerator, for any reason otherthan afault on its associatedbus, willautomaticallytransfer the loadfrom thefailedIDGtothe remainingoperative IDG. WhentheAPUgeneratoris available,it can thenbe usedto replace thefailedIDGtopower therespective ACbus. On the ground,ifthe aircraftis beingpowered with externalACpowerandeithertheAPU or anIDGis brought online,the externalpower willbe automaticallydisconnectedandthe respective APUorIDGgeneratorwillpower allthe ACbuses. When externalpower is notavailable,theAPUgeneratorprovideselectricalpower toalltheACbuses. If an IDGis poweringits respective ACbusandtheAPUgeneratoris poweringtheotherAC bus, whenthe remainingIDGis brought online theAPUgeneratorwillbe automatically taken offline.
Inservice configuration,eitherexternalACpowerortheAPUgeneratoris usedto power specific buses forgeneralservicing oftheaircraft ontheground. OnlyACUtility bus 1, ACUtilitybus 2, the AC servicebus andthe DC servicebus are powered.
