1. RECORDING
Aflightdata recorder(FDR) records aircraftsystemsdata(includingaltitude,airspeed, position,heading, acceleration andradio communications events). TheFDRprovides a digital record of aircraftdataforthelast25hours of aircraftoperation. The FDRnormally receives datafrom dataconcentratorunitNo.1(DCU1), recordstheinformation andsendsit backto the DCU1for comparison. IfDCU1fails,DCU2will supplythedatato theFDR.
The FDRwilloperate whenthe STROBElights switch orBEACONlights switchis selected on,orifthe aircraftis in aweightoff wheels condition. The FDRhas aninternal clock which is used asthetime reference fromwhich events are recorded. An event can be markedby thepilotbyoperation of aFDREVENTbutton on theMiscellaneous Testpanel.
Acockpit voice recorder(CVR) starts recording assoon aspoweris appliedto theaircraft. It hasasolid state non-volatile memorythat records cockpitand mixedPAaudio. The unithas arecording capacity of30 minutes(120 minutes, depending onoption). Thedeceleration of impact removes thepower topreventthedatafrom being erased.
The FDRandCVR eachincludes anunderwaterlocaterdevice (ULD). TheULDis abattery operated,underwater, pulsed acoustic beacon whichhas aninternal switchthatis activated bywater. When activated,theunit sendsout a36.5to 38.5kilohertz signal.
