1. FUEL MANAGEMENT
Fuel managementis accomplishedbyfueltransferfromthe centertanktothe wingtanks andbyfuel crossflow from onewing tanktothe otherwingtank.
A. Fuel Transfer
Fueltransferfrom the centre tanktothe wingtanks is providedbytransfer ejector pumpsto maintain thewingtanks atfull capacity as long aspossible. This is an automatic function with no manualcontrol. The ejectors are poweredbyfuelpressure tappedfromtheengine supplylines via thefueltransfer shutoff valves which are automaticallycontrolledbythefuelsystem computer(FSC). The FSC commandsthe respective transfershutoff valve toopen whenthe associated wingtankfuelquantity falls below 94%offull, andcommandsitto close whenthetankquantity reaches97%. The FSCwillcyclethe transfer systemon and off untilthe centertankis empty.
Ifthefuelimbalance between the wingtanks exceeds400lbs (181kg), aFUEL IMBALANCE caution messageis displayed on theEICASprimarypage. Ifthetotalfuel quantityis less than900lbs (408 kg)thefuelquantityindication ontheprimarypage turns amber.

Inthe eventof wingtankgaugingfailure, theFSCwilluse the highlevel sensors,
located atthetop of eachtank, to controlthefueltransferoperations.
B. Fuel Crossflow
To correctfuelimbalance and to maintain aircraftlateral stability, the FSC automatically initiatesfuel crossflow upondetecting afuelimbalance between wingtanks. The crossflow/APUpumplocated within the centertankprovidespowered crossflowin eitherautomatic ormanual mode.
