1. HORIZONTAL STABILIZER TRIM
The horizontalstabilizertrimsystemsupplementstheelevators in providingpitch control.
The horizontalstabilizer trimsystemprovides pitch trimby varyingthe angle ofincidence of the horizontalstabilizer. The horizontalstabilizerispositionedby ascrew jackdriven bytwo electric motors controlledbythe horizontalstabilizer trim control unit(HSTCU)through a motorcontrolunit(MCU). Each motorhas amagnetic brake to preventtrimrunaway. Trim rangeis from +2b (leadingedgeup)to -
13b (leadingedgedown).
The HSTCUhastwo channels that are engagedby selection oftheSTABTRIM, CH1and CH2engage switches onthecenterpedestal. The horizontal stabilizer ispositioned,by manualoperation ofthe control wheeltrim switches orautomaticallybytheautopilottrim or Machtrimsystems. DuringAFCSoperation,thetrimrateis influencedbyflap movement.
Trim disconnect switches are provided oneach controlwheelto disengagethe stabilizer trim.
The MachtrimsystemisselectedbyengagingtheMach TRIM switchlight onthecenter
pedestal. The Machtrim function oftheHSTCUrepositions thehorizontal stabilizer to make
allowances forthe rearward shift ofthe aerodynamic centerofpressure astheairspeed
increases above Mach0.4. Atleast oneSTAB channelmustbeengagedfortheMachtrim
tofunction.
The HSTCUoperatesin oneoffour modesin thefollowing orderofpriority:
W  Manualtrim -
Nose-
up ornose-
down trim commands(from the control wheel switches) are senttotheHSTCUwhich moves the screwjackat aratethatis dependentonMach airspeed.
