1. ELEVATORS
Longitudinal(pitch) controlis providedbythe elevators andsupplementedby amoveable horizontalstabilizer(see section 50 ofthis chapter).
Two separate elevator controlsystemsare provided. The left elevatorsystemis controlled bythepilotandthe rightsystemiscontrolledbythecopilot. Under normal conditions,the two systems are interconnectedthrough apitchdisconnect mechanism. Forwardandaft movementofeither control column inputs simultaneous movementofboth elevator surfaces. Bothsystemsare similar, withtheexceptions thatthe autopilot servo is connectedto the left elevatorsystem andthe stallprotection stickpushersystem is connectedto the right elevatorsystem. Apitchfeelsimulator unitprovides artificialfeeltothe controlcolumns.
Each elevator systemishydraulicallypoweredbythree powercontrol units(PCU’s)located inthe left andrighthorizontalstabilizers. The PCU’s receive mechanicalinputsfrom the control columns via cable runs andquadrants. Eachhydraulic systempowers oneofthe three PCU’s of each elevator.
Two flutterdampers are installedoutboard ofthePCU’s on each elevator. The flutter dampers are double acting shockabsorbers whichpreventelevator control surface flutterin flightifallhydraulic pressure is losttothePCU’s. Ontheground,theflutterdampers provide agustlockfunction.
Inthe event of an elevatorcontroljam, the left and right elevatorsystems can be mechanically separatedbypulling aPITCHDISChandle andturningit90b tolockthe handle in place. Theoperable side can thenbe usedto maintain pitch control.

NOTE
A difference of up to 3 degrees between the left and right elevator indications on the FLT CONTROL synopticpageisallowed. Whentheelevatorisinthe neutral position (0b : 0.5b), a tolerance of : 1.0b in theindication is allowed.
