1. AILERONS
Lateral control oftheaircraftis providedbythe ailerons with assist from thespoilerons.
The aileron controlsystems consist oftwo control circuits andbothsystems are similarin operation. The pilotoperatestheleft aileron systemandthe copilotoperatesthe right aileron system. Normally, thetwo systems are interconnectedandthere is simultaneous movement ofboth aileron surfaces. Inthe event of ajamineithercircuit,the systemcan be separatedthrough arolldisconnect mechanism. Theautopilotis connectedto the copilots controlsystemonly.
Eachaileron is hydraulicallypoweredbytwo powercontrolunits(PCUs)and mechanically controlledby rotation of eithercontrol wheel. Theleftaileron PCUs are poweredby hydraulicsystems 1and3 andthe right aileron PCUs are poweredbyhydraulicsystems 2 and3. Control wheel movementalso signals the spoiler electronic controlunit(SECU)to inputthe spoileron actuators (on thedown-
going wing)for roll assist.
Control wheel centeringand artificialfeelis providedby mechanicalfeelunits. Aflutter damperis attachedto each aileron to prevent surface flutterin the eventofhydraulic fluid loss atthePCUs duringflight. On theground,theflutterdampers providegustlockfunction.
Inthe eventof anaileron controljam, theleftand rightsystemscan be mechanically separatedbypulling arolldisconnecthandle. The rolldisconnect allows limitedlateral control usingtheunaffectedaileron controlsystemandtheopposite side spoileron. Twenty secondsafterpullingthe rolldisconnecthandle, theROLLSEL(amber) switchlights on the left andrightglareshieldilluminate and aSPOILERONROLL caution message isdisplayed ontheEICASprimarypage. The flight crew thenselects the rollprioritybypressingthe ROLLSEL switchlight ontheoperable side whichallows use ofboth spoilerons. TheROLL SELlight andPLT/CPLTROLLlightwillthen turn green andthe caution message willbe replacedby aPLT/CPLTROLLCMDadvisory message ontheEICAS statuspage.
