The flapsystemis driven byadualmotorpower drive unit. The powerdrive unitdrives the flapsthrough aseries ofdrive shafts, gearboxes andactuators. Brake andposition sensor units, mounted attheoutboardendsofeachdrive system, provide braking forasymmetric protection andprovide surface position feedbackto theFECU.
The flap selectorhasthefollowing selectable flapdetentpositions:
W 0degrees, 20degrees, 30degrees, and45degrees.
W 0degrees, 8degrees, 20degrees, 30degrees, and45degrees. <0006>
The lever quadrantfeature agateatthe20degree setting. The gatepreventsinadvertent flap selection to 0degrees during amissedapproachandprecludes VFE(flaps30)from being exceeded.To move thelever throughthegate,it mustbepusheddown (against a spring) anthenmovedforward oraft.
The lever quadrantfeatures two gates, oneatthe8degree settingand oneatthe20degree setting. The gateatthe8degree settingpreventsinadvertentflap selection to 0degrees during amissedapproach(go-
around)andthegate at20degrees, precludes VFE(flaps30) frombeing exceeded.To move thelever through agate,it mustbepusheddown (against a spring) anthenmovedforward oraft. <0006>
When aflap selection is made,theFECU releases the systembrakesand commandsthe power drive unitto deploy orretracttheflapstothe selectedposition.
NOTE
1.
An overspeed clackerwill soundiftheairspeedistoohighfor theselectedflap setting.

To ensure that the correct flap position is selected for go-
around, make sure that the back face of the flap lever is pushed withoutanydownwardpressure.

If one ofthe two power drive unit motors fails,the systemwillremainfunctional, butwill operate athalf speed and aFLAPSHALFSPEED status messagewillbe displayed on the EICAS statuspageand ontheFLTCONTROLS synoptic page.
The EICASprimarypagewilldisplayflapposition in relation to landinggearposition when eitherthelandinggear orflaps are extended. Atall othertimes, thegearandflap information is removedfromtheprimarypage,butflapposition is always displayed on the FLTCONTROLS synoptic page.
