Data communications consistsoftheAirborne Communications Addressing andReporting System (ACARS) TheACARSprovidesthe capabilityto route messagesbetween the aircraftandtheground-
baseddatalink service providers. The ACARSenables theaircraft tofunction asan airborne communications terminalandperforms airline operational communications andlimitedairtraffic service functions.
The ACARSoperates withtheflight managementsystem totransmitdownlink messages andreceive uplink messages usingVHF3. VHF3is usedfordataonly, andnotfor communications. Control oftheACARSfunctions is provided via theMENUpages onthe FMSCDU.
