The SELCALsystem permitsgroundstations equipped withSELCALtone transmitting equipmentto callindividualaircraft selectivelyby means ofacodedRF signal ontheVHF communication systems. WhentheSELCALsystemreceives the code,itsends avisual andoral messagetoalerttheflight crew. This eliminatesthe necessityof continuous monitoringof routine radio signals.

The decoderis a5-channel, 16-tone decoderlocated in theforward avionics compartment andreceives VHF communication systems inputs. The decoderhasindependentinputsfor uptofive radio sources to drive five decoder channels. Any ofthe available VHF communication systems can be usedfor SELCAL monitoring. The SELCAL code isa four-
letter code assignedto each aircraftandis representedby acombination ofaudio tone signals.
