The ACARS consistsof aCommunications ManagementUnit(CMU)and anAircraft PersonalityModule (APM). A. Communications Management Unit (CMU) The CMUfunctions asthecentralprocessingand routing computer. TheCMUgathers aircraftdata from the various systemssuch as: aircrafttailnumber, flight number, departure station,etc. foruse in the downlink messagesandfor eventdetection. The systemallowstheaircraftto locateandacquire agroundstation for communications. The CMUinterfaces withother avionics systems to provide ACARSfunction and operation. These systems/componentsinclude: W The FMSCDU,whichprovides the crew with ameans fordata entryintothe ACARS, abilityto receive anddisplay uplink messagesand avisualindication that thedata communication linkis operatingproperly. W VHF3 configuredfordatalink. The CMUtunesVHF3totheACARSdata frequency(Canada:131.475Mhz)(UnitedStates:131.55Mhz)(Europe:131.725 Mhz). Whenthe aircraft moves from onenetwork coveragetoanother, theACARS willautomatically searchfor the appropriatefrequency. While searchingfor ausable frequency, aNOCOMMadvisoryis displayed ontheCDU. The advisorywillbe removed whentheACARSis communicating with aVHFground station. W The CMU, which uses ARINCbuses forincoming data from theData concentrator units (DCU’s). W The CMUalso uses theIntegratedAvionics Processor System ARINCbuses for incomingdata. W The transponder, whichprovidesthe aircraftsuniqueICAOaddress (ModeS).
