The electronic flightinstrumentsin theflight compartmentinstrumentpanel, controlpanels anddisplayunitsin thecenterpedestal, andelectronic unitsin theleftand rightportions of theunderflooravionics bayare cooledduring on-groundandflightoperations.
The cockpitdisplays are cooled with airfrom two displayfanslocatedundertheflight compartmentfloor. Fan controlis providedby aDSPLYFAN selectorknob ontheavionics coolingpanel. Normally, only onefanoperatesat atime (controlledbyWOW). Inflight,only fan1is poweredand ontheground,onlyfan 2is powered. Whenpowered,the respective fandraws in recirculatedair fromtheflight compartmentand mixes it with conditionedair thensupplies theair to thebacks ofeachdisplay. In the eventof afan failure, thealternate fancan bepoweredby selectingtheFLTALTN or GNDALTNposition. Ifbothfans fail, selectingSTDBYpermits conditionedairto ventilatethedisplays. Alow flow sensor monitors theairflow toensure adequatecooling. Check valves preventloss ofcooling air or reverse flow.
Two ARINC coolingfans are installedundertheflight compartmentfloor. Thefans are used toprovide recirculated cabin air totheleftand rightavionics equipment racks. Fan controlis providedby anARINCFAN selector knob ontheavionics coolingpanel. In theNORM position,only onefanoperatesat atime (controlledbyWOW). Inflight,onlyfan 1is poweredand ontheground,onlyfan 2is powered. Inthe eventof afan failure, the alternatefan can be poweredby selectingtheFLTALTN or GNDALTNposition.
The avionics exhaustsystemconsistsof anexhaustfan, an inboard exhaust valve andan outboard exhaust valve. The exhaustfan is installedin the avionics compartmentand operates whenever ACBUS1is powered. The fan is usedto remove warm air from the CRTdisplays,pedestalpanels andtheleftand rightavionics equipment racks,thendirectit tothe exhaust valves. Wheneitherthepassengerdoororservice dooris open,theinboard valve is closedandtheoutboard valve is opento exhausttheair to the wing root area. Whenthepassengerand service doors are closed,theoutboard valve is closedandthe inboard valve is opento exhausttheair to the rear lower fuselage where itis dumped overboardthroughtheoutflow valves.
