UP GUIDANCE SYSTEM <0026>
The head-
upguidancesystem(HGS)projectsinstrumentandairplane systemsdata holographicallybetween thepilotandthepilot’s windshield. Attitude,airspeed,flightpath guidance andotherinformation are displayedin symbolic format. HGS allows thepilotto fly theairplane duringCategoryIIIainstrumentapproachesin ahead-
upposition. A combiner opticallydiffracts (reflects)flight symbologytoinfinityandallows thepilotto lookthroughthe display withouteye movement orshiftin eye focus.
HGS consists ofthe following:
W Combiner, The combiner is mounted onthepilot’s windshieldframe andcan be usedduringground andflightoperations. The combiner is deployedand stowedby actuating aleveronthe RH side. Aninfraredtransmitterandalignmentdetectorautomatically checkiftheoptical element/combineris outofposition. The combiner also incorporates amanual/automatic brightness control.
W ControlPanel, The controlpanelis used tosetsystemreferences,flightandsystemtest modes.
W OverheadUnit, The overheadunit contains aCRTtogenerate symbologyand alens toprojectthe symbology onthecombiner.
W DriveElectronics Unit,
The drive electronics unit contains theCRTdrive circuitryandpower supplies.
