Citation Mustang is one of the soon-to-fly very light jets. (See Annex I.)

This annex briefly surveys some of the new very light jets (VLJs) likely to be in use in the near future.
Eclipse Aviation is a newcomer in the industry, with their first jet due to be delivered in mid 2006. Eclipse’s ambition is to revolutionize the jet indus-try with an affordable twin engine aircraft. They view their competitors as being business class airline services and automobiles. As of November 2005 Eclipse had booked 2,357 sales of aircraft (through 2012), at an average price of around 1.4M $US. A large portion of the sales have gone to hopeful air taxi operators, although they estimate that nearly 40% of US sales are to private owners. They also see the Eclipse 500 converting turboprop and piston holders to jet ownership. Perhaps 50 deliveries/year might come to Europe.
Cessna is the most experienced of the manufactur-ers, with some 4,200 Citation jets built between 1993 and 2005. The expansion of their Citation jet line with the Mustang VLJ is a logical step to main-tain their position in the smaller end of the jet mar-ket. They are hoping to achieve single pilot FAA cer-tification by the end of 2006 and make their first deliveries shortly thereafter. The Mustang will cost around 2.4M $US and as of September 2005 Cessna had 240 firm orders.
Adam Aircraft’s VLJ Project is called the A700, and is derived from an Adam’s piston model, the A500. This has allowed them to reduce the development time from an estimated five years to three. The plane is priced around 2.25M $US, and FAA certifi-cation is expected during 2006. In September 2005 they had around 85 orders and are predicting an annual production of 60 aircraft. Adam Aircraft expects European certification to take place in 2008.
